For more than two decades, GTM Fiji has been steadfast in its commitment to empowering indigenous communities, with a particular focus on those residing in forest-dependent highland and maritime regions. The organization specializes in grassroots resourcing to advance community empowerment, fostering resilience at the levels of individuals, families, and broader society. Introduction:Navavai Project Pilot Site (2024–2028)
Navavai Village, located in the heart of Tokaimalo in the Ra Province of Fiji, has been chosen as the pilot site for our transformative community development initiatives spanning 2024 to 2028. This picturesque village, renowned for its rich cultural heritage and breathtaking natural surroundings, is uniquely positioned as the birthplace of the famed Wainibuka River. The Wainibuka River flows through the provinces of Ra and Tailevu before merging into the great Rewa River, Fiji’s widest river, which ultimately opens to the sea.The selection of Navavai as our project site is both symbolic and strategic. As the origin of one of Fiji’s most significant waterways, the village embodies the interconnectedness of people, ecosystems, and resources. Over the next five years, Navavai will serve as a hub for implementing sustainable development activities aimed at fostering resilience, empowerment, and prosperity within the community.Our work will include environmental conservation efforts, livelihood enhancement projects, capacity-building programs, and initiatives that promote sustainable development. By working collaboratively with the people of Navavai and integrating their indigenous knowledge systems and cultural values, we aim to create locally driven solutions that honor their traditions while addressing contemporary challenges.Navavai will be a model for holistic development, showcasing the power of grassroots innovation and collective action. Together, we envision Navavai becoming an enlightened and resilient community with empowered choices, paving the way for a prosperous, united, and sustainable future for all.
